Brightspace: How-To Information for Faculty

Login and Basic Navigation


Click on the D2L Brightspace button that can be found on the same page as login buttons for Banner, Degreeworks and other academic systems. Or go to:

Choose the purple login link titled Network Users.

Use your Downstate email address as your username along with your current NetID password.

If you can't log in, send an email to

Click on the SUNY logo at upper left to return to the home page from inside a course.

Click on the Select a Course button (a.k.a., the "waffle" button) to view a list of courses where you are enrolled:

Don’t see your course?
  1. Principal instructors are automatically enrolled into Brightspace courses based on their Banner teaching assignment. Send requests to the Registrar to add you if you are the principal instructor.
  2. The principal instructor is responsible for adding other faculty to their course. View instructions and video
  3. Deans, degree program chairs/directors and administrators have ‘cascading’ access rights to their courses. They can access a course and add other faculty.

Click on the Brightspace Resources link to access help, FAQs and the Brightspace community where you can post questions.

You can also call the SUNY Online Helpdesk — their number is listed on the Home page at upper right. They are available evenings and weekends.
