The Medical Research Library is currently CLOSED due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

We are working remotely to continue our services.

We will continue to process requests for articles and book chapters.

Book requests cannot be processed at this time.

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service offered to Downstate students, faculty and staff that provides electronic scans of articles and book chapters, monographs, and audiovisual materials that are not owned by The Medical Research Library of Brooklyn. Patrons must first set up an account.

Logging in/Creating an Account

Logging in

  1. On the left hand side of the Medical Research Library webpage, click on Interlibrary Loan.

  2. Log in to Illiad using your username and password. Your username and password is set by you when you create your Illiad account. If you forget your login information DO NOT CREATE ANOTHER ACCOUNT. Please email ( or call the Interlibrary Loan office and your password will be reset. If you create another account it will delay the processing of your request. If you have never used Illiad you will need to create an account.

Creating an Account

  1. If you have never used illiad, click on First time users. You will be directed to our Interlibrary Loan information page. Click on 'First Time Users Click Here'. 

  2. Fill in all of the information with asterisks. Your ID number is either the 16 digit number on your ID, your NetID or student ID.


  4. After filling in your information, click submit information.

  5. You now have an illiad account. There will be a page where your asked to Add Account. There is no need to add an account. 

Requesting articles, books, book chapters and audiovisual materials

Patrons should search the Library catalog prior to requesting an item through ILL to determine whether the book or journal needed is NOT available in our collection.

Processing of ILL requests:

  • Click on Article, Book, Book Chapter, etc. under New Request.

  • Fill in all information for item you would like to request. If information is not complete, it will delay the processing of your request.

  • Click submit at bottom of page.

  • Requests are processed within 24 hours of receipt of request or by the next business day.

  • On average, it takes 3-7 days for a request to be filled locally.

  • For material that must be obtained from outside the New York metropolitan area, or for difficult to obtain materials, requests may take longer.

  • Before placing a request, users must create an online account.
  • Click here to request an item.

Notification, Material Pick-up, Charges


An email will be sent to borrowers when requested materials arrive.

  • ILL materials must be picked up by the borrower who placed the request or their designee.
  • Presentation of your valid SUNY- ID card is required when claiming ILL materials.
  • There is no charge for Interlibrary Loan services. If charges apply for items (such as lost materials), fees are payable by personal check, purchase requisitions, credit cards or by cash submitted to the Bursar's Office, M-F, 10am - 4pm.
  • Some charges may apply to ILL services (such as RUSH requests). Fees are payable by personal check, purchase requisitions, credit cards, or by cash submitted to the Bursar's Office, Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm.
