Choosing a Secure Password

DO DON'T
  • Choose a password with 8 characters or more
  • Don't use your user name in the password
  • Use a combination of upper case, lower case letters, numbers and symbols
  • Don't use an easily guessed password
  • Use a long pass phrase
  • Don't use information such as your birthday or phone numbers
  • Use a password manager and a secure master password
  • Don't share it with anyone
  • Change it immediately if you suspect it is compromised.
  • Don't reveal it in an email message or a web site
  • Lock the computer screen with password when you leave your computer unattended.
  • Don't write your password on a sticky note and leave it around your desk — if you have to write the password down, lock it in a secure place
